Black Bears,Grizzlies and Bear Grylls

Black Bears,Grizzlies and Bear Grylls

Like most people, when it comes to distinguishing between bear types, I was pretty confused about the difference between brown bears and Grizzlies. It is easy to get confused due to the fact that  brown and black bears can have brown or black fur. So I did a little digging to clear this up for everyone.

Fitness Training: All The Difference of 30 Miles

Fitness Training: All The Difference of 30 Miles

I’m a fairly active guy but lately I felt like I’ve been spending too much time at the desk and building quite the beer belly without the luxury of drinking beer. I’m fairly active and run  and lift weights in between boot camp fitness and pilates classes but in the past, I’ve been in far better shape. My girlfriend works at a hospital and wears a pedometer while running around at work. Every day she logs in about 5.5-6.5 miles at an insane walking pace (you practically have to jog to keep up with her walking pace) and I wanted to simply increase my physical output and log the results.

One week I decided I was going to make a change to my routine and add 30 miles of running, walking or swimming. I wanted to see the difference an added 30 miles would make in my weight and self image, without changing my diet (at first), trying some crazy concoction or anything else. I eat fairly well, no fast food or soda but I am not by any means a purist. I drink about a gallon or more of water each day and workout regularly, doing pilates and boot camp fitness twice a week. I hope to do this without the assistance of caffeine or other legal or illegal stimulants (joking) at all. My initial weigh in was 188 lbs strong- ooh rah!

Ray Bans and Windsurfing for Old Bulls

We love to tell stories about old bulls and young studs that perpetuate our denial about the facts of life. For those uninitiated, the story of the two bulls goes something like this:

Happy Mother's Day

Happy Mother’s Day

I am that I am, and that I’m not,
For what you have given me,
who you were when I knew you then, who you are, as I know you now,
everything I remember, and everything else I left behind or forgot.
And I am made more,
as I choose to be
I’d have no choice at all
if I was not.

Passing Trailers, Blurry Signs and Imaginings

Passing Trailers, Blurry Signs and Imaginings

 |  by  |  Creative  |  No Comments

I watch big rigs blow by me on the freeway as I exit on my way to class. The signs on the sides of their trailers are a semi legible blur. today I swear I saw a truck carrying an empty flatbed trailer that had signs on the side that I thought read “Submarine Rentals”. I imagine that somewhere in some deep body of water, some lucky person is driving and abusing a submarine like a rental car; scraping up on coral reef, honking and whale tail gating, torpedoing boats and so on. Where do I sign up?

Why They Don’t Let My Kind in Natural History Museums

I love this image and this completely captures my attitude and persona. Where have all the dragons gone? How far must I venture to find one. It is a sad, sad day when we can only slay metaphors.

Mastering FunderEmployment

Mastering FunderEmployment

First, let me clear the rumors. That is not a photo of me flying from the second story, through the air onto a pile of air mattresses. That is  my inner child and stunt double. I wrote a post earlier this week on thought2profit about things I did/do while under-employed. After writing the post, I found this photo. This photo reminds me of how positive and happy I should be with what I have not what I do not. We should all be so lucky to have so much free time and alcohol to do something so reckless, hilarious and fun. Feeling down about the economy and joblessness is a waste of time and a submissive response to world that would have you chained to a desk. This photo reminded me that there are opportunities and ways to make a living that don’t require 100% of my time.

Things I’ve Written While Away From My Creative Blog

Dear Blog,

I’m sorry I haven’t written in a long time. I have a lot of creative things I need to share with you, but I wanted to show you some things I’ve written on my other projects that are worth checking out. I know it really sucks to be apart for so long but I am out there trying to make a difference. Please don’t be sad or jealous. You said we have an open relationship. Don’t worry, you are home to me :) .

This is what I must get out to clear my head, when I have a mind for metal, business and dread. Understand, that these things I must write, in order to find my way back here, to my home.

Stealing Juice from Hemingway

Stealing Juice from Hemingway

“In going where you have to go, and doing what you have to do, and seeing what you have to see, you dull and blunt the instrument you write with. But I would rather have it bend and dull and know I had to put it on the grindstone again and hammer it into shape and put a whetstone to it, and know that I had something to write about, than to have it bright and shining and nothing to say, or smooth and well-oiled in the closet, but unused.” Hemingway

I tripped over this quote while cleaning up my notebooks. It was a serendipitous discovery and reinvigorated my connection with writing after a  long absence.

Hypergraphia

Some things I feel I must write in order for others to follow. Scribbles and lists that I know are not well must be pushed through before they cause a clog. A clog is usually the culprit for my writer’s block. Heaven forbid I get an idea especially for business. Business ideas  involve extensive writing, planning and explanation and can keep me couped up and tangled for years until properly expressed and exhausted. I get clogged by other things too. I imagine that lists hit like flu season for writers. Lists of to do’s and want to’s and got to have’s fill me up from time to time. Luckily for me I have felt quite satisfied and built up a tolerance to the got to have’s, so that one doesn’t hit me as often.

Spring Cleaning

 |  by  |  Journal  |  No Comments

I felt that I had done less last year and clung to the accomplishments and adventures of the years before. I felt like I had used them all year as a safety blanket to protect me from facing the path ahead; the big unknown. I looked at the large cork board I keep in my office. I noticed that I held tightly to old trinkets, ticket stubs, coasters and photos from far too many years ago. I’m always careful to keep all the adventurous evidence visible, afraid that to put them away would be to saying goodbye to a favorite home and identity. I was more worried that without them I’d  forget the stories and adventures I most cherished and wouldn’t be able to find suitable thoughts and experiences to replace them. In the acknowledgment of that fear I realized  that I can not lay claim to a moment nor preserve it. I could only cherish it and move forward.

Let us build our home with walls of comfort and windows of compassion. Let it rest upon the foundation of great works, deeds and intentions. Let it be filled with the pleasant sounds of songs and laughter, toasting glasses and endless discussion. Let it be adorned with art of all kinds to remind us that as we reach out we reach in. Let our home be captured in our stories and carried in our lives.

New WebSites For Unrelated Content:LOC Remains Uncensored Creative Zone

good news everyone

I haven’t written in an organized effort at a regular interval in a while and it’s driving me nuts. So, to help keep me sane and because I can’t help but to express myself and I am a total scatter brain, I’ve shuffled things around a bit to accommodate all the happenings. I have several blogs and will be splitting up content among them. They are separated into various subject areas in Technology, Business, Politics, Work/Life Balance, and then here you will find my creative/personal blurbs.

So the good news is here on LOC, you’ll see more of my creative writing, photo journals and hear of my adventures, minus the nerdy, political and business blurbs. Bear with me as I migrate everything around. You might notice a bit of overlap, or the occasional reference to one of the other websites, but hopefully it’s not too distracting.

I’ve separated everything into flavors- so feel free- it’s self serve.

Piracy is Clearly NOT Killing the Movie Industry: 2009 Best Year EVER for HollyWood00

 |  by  |  Technology  |  No Comments

Hollywood had its best year ever in 2009. It made more money than ever before, yet piracy is killing the business? It wasn’t too long ago that Hollywood went on a massive campaign stating that piracy is killing the movie business and they HAD to raise prices. Well if we judge by the numbers we can plainly see their pants are on fire.Further more, Hollywood and Apple (iTunes) seem to be redundantly charging us for things we have already purchased.

A Look At Phonebooth- Google Voice With Features for Grown-Ups

 |  by  |  Technology  |  No Comments

What is Phonebooth Free? from Bandwidth.com on Vimeo.

Info: Phonebooth is a VOIP phone service like Google Voice but with a feature set ideal for growing businesses . Phonebooth has similar features to Google Voice: visual voicemail, redundant data centers, call routing and a slick interface. Phonebooth pushes the solution a few steps ahead of Google by offering HD voice qaulity, conference calling and an auto-attendant “Press 1 to annoy your customer” menus.

Price: Phonebooth offered a free service (no longer available) and has a pro plan that costs $20 per month per user

UPDATE- THERE ARE NO MORE FREE ACCOUNTS AVAILABLE- I Repeat NO FREE ACCOUNTS- If you’d like an invite to Google Voice instead email me: nicholas@heroikmedia.com

My Thoughts on Phonebooth Pro

I think for a growing company, Phonebooth would be a great tool. They take out a lot of competition and cost with their simplicity and consumers love simplicity when it comes to technology. (Insert Fisher-Price to Mac reference- on 2nd thought Win 7 is pretty user friendly and awesome as well.)

6 Things I Love About Microsoft’s Courier Project

After watching a few of the videos for Microsoft’s Courier Project, I wanted to share my thoughts and my joy.

1. The Natural & Intuitive Design of the Courier Concept

This is the closest I’ve seen to a paper replacement that actually adds features (maybe minus 3d origami-although I’m sure there will be an app for that-Sketch-up Origami Edition?). To the Apple fanboys who say Microsoft stopped innovating I give you the Courier project and Windows Phone 7. I mention user interface so as not to be confused with an application interface that we are still dealing with now. User interface design implies catering to the users and what we have now seems to be more app centric and disposable. We are now witnessing the epic battle between design mindsets of interface design. It comes down to that which is designed to be used versus designed to be bought, clicked, consumed and thrown away. Courier seems like child’s play. Whether you’re 4 or 40, you’ll find it fun and interesting.

12 Things to Write About in Your Heroik Fitness Journal

I often get asked about how I stay motivated to stay fit. My not-so-secret method is that I put forth a real effort into connecting to my health and fitness, in as many ways as I possibly can, to my happiness and everything I wish to achieve. I constantly find subtle ways to remind myself of the interdependencies between my health, fitness, and my happiness & productivity. One of the most under-utilized, under-appreciated and most important tool I use: a fitness journal. Here are some tips to add value to your journal and help you become aware of how your health and fitness play a significant role in your overall well being.

The Apple Angle-A Look at the Lure

Users are impressed by Apple’s  shiny design and interface of its devices. They become familiar with interface accepts storefront condition as norm and before the user knows they have surrendered their freedom and control for a censored, limited, media device.

Let us take a look at what brought Apple to this new strategy. To understand where we are going we must first look back at what brought us here.

Apple’s New Focus: Closed Computing-Because You Don’t Know Better

Steve Jobs & Apple recently unveiled the iPad, essentially, a big iPod touch. But the big revelation was not the device or the innovative hardware used to make it so efficient. They real shocker was that Apple came out and said that they believe the future of computing is in “closed devices”.

What is a closed device? One that you wouldn’t want. Imagine having an exotic car that comes with a driver. It is very high performance and looks amazing, however, the driver will only drive to destinations approved by the car company at speeds approved by the car company. This is Apple’s approach. You don’t even get to drive the car or choose where you’re going.
